“Nature Regeneration Series: Mutation, Specimen A”

Mixed-media fiber sculpture
Statement
I am a mixed media and fiber artist. I especially enjoy handwork and often incorporate free-form crochet, embroidery, needle felting and hand beading into my art. I have taken on a new direction in my work and am working with fiber in a more sculpture way incorporating recycled wool sweaters and blankets into much of my work.
My process always begins with a question to tackle whatever might be puzzling or troubling me at the moment. It could be Prejudice, Feminism, Global Warming, Suburban Sprawl, Motherhood, or Plastic Surgery. My current body of work, “The Nature Regeneration Series”, ponders the future of Nature with or without the presence of humanity.
My love of art materials and learning new techniques necessitates my need to be a mixed media artist. When I am working on a concept, I spend a lot of time reading, journaling and playing with different materials. Once I begin working on a piece, I will often change direction as the materials dictate how the work should evolve.
I have found time and time again that while I am working on a piece, the art starts answering my questions. I often incorporate words into my work hoping the text will invite the viewer to ask their own questions. The work often calms my fears, quells my anger and brings me a greater measure of peace.
